Berlin talks begin - Ukraine, US, Germany kick off high-stakes negotiations amid Zelensky's push for 'reliable' security guarantees

"The United States, Ukraine and Germany opened high-level talks in Berlin on Sunday aimed at bridging the 'remaining gaps' between Washington's peace proposal and Kiev's demands to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Footage shows Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky greeting US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's former Senior Advisor Jared Kushner. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz can also be seen attending the meeting. Ahead of the talks, Zelensky stressed that the priority was securing guaranteed safety, writing on social media: "Only reliable guarantees will work for peace. We expect that partners will also continue to work constructively." The Ukrainian leader announced earlier that Kiev is prepared to ditch its constitutional ambition to join NATO in exchange for legally binding Western security guarantees as a necessary 'compromise' to pave the way for a peace deal. Witkoff and Kushner are in the German capital to lead a renewed push from the Trump administration to secure an agreement based on the US-proposed 28-point peace framework, which has met scepticism from Kiev and European capitals. The US diplomats are scheduled to hold separate meetings throughout Sunday and Monday, culminating in a summit with Zelensky. The talks are considered crucial for narrowing what Washington officials describe as the 'remaining gaps' between the US proposal and Kiev's demands. On Monday, President Zelensky is also due to meet with a coalition of European leaders, including Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The US framework, which the negotiators previously discussed with Moscow, is believed to contain provisions that would require territorial concessions from Ukraine, a non-starter for President Zelensky, who has publicly refused to surrender any land."
