"Dozens of people joined an anti-migration protest on Sunday in The Hague amid growing tensions over immigration and rising living costs in the Netherlands. Footage shows demonstrators marching with Dutch and National Protest flags through the streets of the City of Peace and Justice, as they chanting their opposition to an asylum centre. Signs with messages including ‘Anti AZC (asylum seekers' centre)’ and ‘We claim our country back!’ can also be seen. “There are too many people in our little country, and we need to put our people first. And the problems that are arising here in the Netherlands are with living spaces; we have no houses here in the Netherlands. And 70,000 people each year are coming into the Netherlands,” National Protest leader Martijn Koops said. “Every country needs certain immigrants because they are making the economy better. But when it is a massive immigration, that like a lot of food,” one of the protesters, Caroline. “If we have a lot of food, too much food, it can be harmful for our health,” she added. The protest was called by the National Protest organisation, following a national plan to create additional spaces for asylum seekers as the Netherlands struggles to accommodate rising numbers. However, many of the local councils reportedly paused the decision on new asylum centres until after the upcoming national elections, as immigration and its associated costs are becoming one of the central issues in the country. The Dutch Ministry of Asylum and Migration estimated the average daily cost of housing an asylum seeker at about €71. The total 2025 budget for the admission and reception of foreigners, including asylum seekers, stands at about €9.48 billion, or less than one percent of the country's GDP. Through the first nine months of 2025, the Netherlands recorded a total of 16,600 first-time applications - lower than other EU countries such as Germany, Spain, Italy and France."
