'Defeat is always brief' - Jara concedes nationalists' victory in pres elex, vows to keep fighting for 'fairer' Chile

"Jeannette Jara, a socialist candidate for the Unidad por Chile coalition, gave a speech following her defeat in the second-round election against Jose Antonio Kast. She acknowledged the will of the Chilean people and announced that she would continue to work on the issues she supported during her campaign, including social justice, security, and equal opportunities for all regions of the country. "Today democracy spoke loud and clear. A few minutes ago, I communicated with the president-elect, Jose Antonio Kast. For the good of Chile and for all the people who live in our country," Jara said. According to the Chilean Electoral Service (Servel), the Republican Party candidate obtained 58.16 per cent of the votes cast, compared to 41.84 per cent of the ballots received by the left-wing candidate. Jara also acknowledged that the expected results were not achieved, but she said that 'defeat is always brief', and she expressed gratitude to those who had actively participated in her campaign, praising the hard work of party members. "Dear compatriots, it is clear that we did not get the result we wanted, but defeat is always brief," she said, adding, "I want to thank the thousands of people who trusted this project, those who worked and mobilised from north to south, and those who were tireless in this campaign." Following Jara's defeat, Kast will become the new president for the 2026-2030 term. He has competed for the presidency twice before. The 59-year-old politician pledged to fight organised crime with the help of the so-called 'Relentless Plan' and to secure borders to control migration."
