"Thousands marched in Budapest on Saturday, calling on the government to take urgent action to improve conditions for children in foster homes and state-run institutions, following a series of high-profile cases of violence and abuse. Footage shows demonstrators rallying with banners reading 'Hands off the children,' gathering on the Szechenyi Chain Bridge and near Sandor Palace as they held candles and stuffed toys. Opposition leader and TISZA party head Peter Magyar addressed the crowd, accusing officials of neglecting the needs of vulnerable children in state care. “This power can’t say that anything is more important than the tens of thousands of children entrusted to them,” said Magyar. "Don't fear, we will protect you from the villains, the monsters, and those who help them. Be they careless authorities, even politicians," he added. "A power can't say that Brussels of Moscow or Washington - or smear campaigning me - are more important than thousands of Hungarian children’s calmness, health, safety and happiness!" he continued. The rally was triggered by a recently leaked video from a care institute and a series of child abuse scandals, including allegations of sexual violence involving figures linked to the governing party. In response, Orban placed Hungary’s detention centres under police control and launched an investigation into the reported abuse. However, opposition leaders argue that the cases highlight systemic issues in government-run juvenile centres. Hungary is set to hold elections on April 12, 2026, with Magyar's Tisza Party, part of the European People’s Party (EPP), competing closely with Orban's Fidesz in the polls."
