He stressed that Hanukkah celebrations would continue worldwide, describing antisemitism and terrorism as "a global threat that considers Jews to be legitimate targets everywhere." Members of the Union of Jewish Students in France highlighted the recurring nature of attacks during Jewish holidays. One student said the community was "once again attacked during a Jewish celebration," adding that Jewish symbols are also 'being attacked'. Other mourners underlined a sense of shared pain across borders. One participant said the gathering aimed to show Australian Jews that 'when they are hurt, we are hurt too.' The vigil followed an attack in Sydney earlier on Sunday during Hanukkah celebrations at Bondi Beach, which left several members of the Jewish community dead. Authorities have confirmed that at least 16 people were killed, including one of the gunmen, with dozens more injured. New South Wales police subsequently announced that that gunmen were a father and son, noting that its forces had killed the elder of the two during the shootout while the younger attacker was in 'critical but stable' condition in hospital."
