'Chile woke up and realised what it needed' - Santiago erupts in celebration following Kast's election win

"Hundreds poured into the streets of multiple Chilean cities on Sunday to celebrate Republican Party leader Jose Antonio Kast's victory in the presidential runoff. Footage from Santiago captures crowds waving Chilean flags, honking car horns, jumping and singing in a jubilant celebration. "It is wonderful, really. I mean, it was something Chile needed," one supporter said. "Chile woke up and Chile realised what it needed." "The change was important and we're really, super happy. I speak for myself and for all Chileans, we really needed a change, and I believe that with Jose Antonio it will be noticeable," another added. Chile's northern and southern regions erupted in mass gatherings, as supporters filled town squares, streets, and main avenues to commemorate the victory. According to Chile's Electoral Service (Servel), the Republican Party candidate secured 58.16 percent of the vote, defeating his socialist rival Jeannette Jara, who garnered 41.84 percent. With this victory, Kast is set to assume the presidency for the 2026–2030 term, marking his third attempt at the nation's highest office after two previous campaigns. The 59-year-old has vowed to fight organised crime through his proposed 'Relentless Plan' and promised to strengthen border security in an effort to control migration."
