"General Maly Socheata, the spokesperson for the Cambodian military, dismissed Thailand's claims on Monday, stating that Cambodia's self-defence efforts are directed solely at military targets in Thailand and do not include civilians, speaking from Phnom Penh. "Cambodia completely rejects the dissemination of false information and the distortion of facts by the Thai side. We reiterate that Cambodia’s right to self-defence is solely directed at Thai military targets and has never targeted civilian areas," Socheata said. The response comes as Thailand's Foreign Ministry highlighted the impact on civilians, noting the government's ongoing efforts to brief international partners, including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, about the situation. "The Royal Government of Cambodia has formally decided to suspend all entry and exit movements at designated hostile land and maritime border checkpoints contiguous with the Kingdom of Thailand," Socheata added. Detailing the incidents, she said fighting intensified in Cambodia’s 5th Military Region from the afternoon of December 14 through the morning of December 15. "Conversely, the Thai side has deliberately attacked locations where Cambodian civilians reside, resulting in the deaths of 11 innocent Cambodian civilians, including one infant, and injuring 59 others as of December 14, 2025,” Socheata claimed. This comes as tensions flared on the Thai-Cambodian border last week. Bangkok reported several soldiers and civilians were killed during evacuations. Cambodia reported 11 civilian deaths and 74 injuries. US President Donald Trump brokered a ceasefire signed on October 26 following the previous border crisis. Both sides have blamed the other for renewed clashes, with Thailand accusing Cambodia of indiscriminate rocket fire against civilian and military areas."
