"The leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) gathered in Abuja on Sunday to discuss regional security, which has been impacted by political unrest in recent weeks. Footage shows motorcades of delegations arriving at the meeting venue, with representatives taking group photos and attending the summit. Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima greeted the officials and presided over the session afterwards. ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray condemned the latest coup attempts in Benin and Guinea-Bissau, which saw 'unconstitutional change' of government and elections 'torpedoed by military intervention'. The bloc's authorities also commended Nigerian forces for their leading efforts in ensuring security in Benin, while urging member states to uphold regional stability and safeguard civilians' rights. "Security is not only a military obligation; it is a human imperative, essential for protecting families, livelihoods and the dignity of our citizens," noted Julius Maada Bio, Chairman President of the ECOWAS. "Our unity is not transactional but foundational. We remain persuaded that fraternity, not force, must define the future of our community," affirmed Nigerian VP Shettima. In recent weeks, there have been attempts at coups against governments in Benin and Guinea-Bissau. The coup in Benin was eventually contained, but Guinea-Bissau is currently under interim leadership after a military takeover in late November."
