Come get your fraudsters! - Myanmar tells foreign govts to take back '13,392' people 'from 47 countries' after crackdown on scam centres

"Myanmar urged world governments to 'retrieve' thousands of foreign nationals from online scam centres that were detained and are awaiting repatriation, as the government intensifies efforts to dismantle fraud networks operating in border regions. Speaking at a press briefing in Yangon, Major General Zaw Min Tun, head of the National Defence and Security Council's press office, said Myanmar considers the custody of foreign victims 'a very serious responsibility'. "The foreigners are being held in full humanitarian custody until their governments come to retrieve them," he reported. "The state government is taking this action for the sake of national dignity. I would like to ask the relevant countries to bring back the remaining ones as soon as possible." "13,392 foreigners from 47 countries have been detained, and 11,613 have been deported. There are 1,779 who have not been deported," Colonel Min Thu Kyaw added. He reported most of the detainees are Chinese nationals, followed by citizens from other Asian and African countries, adding that some repatriation processes can take several months due to diplomatic and logistical constraints. Online scam centres operating along Myanmar’s borders have become a regional concern in recent years, with victims trafficked from dozens of countries and forced to work in fraud schemes. Myanmar authorities say the networks are run by transnational criminal groups and have stepped up cooperation with Thailand and China, demolishing hundreds of buildings linked to scam operations as part of the campaign."
