"In a quiet corner of National Central University in Taoyuan, Taiwan, a small convenience store has revolutionised the grab-and-go shopping experience and become an unexpected online sensation. Footage captured on Monday shows shoppers entering the unmanned 7-Eleven store. There are no cashier lines, no barcode scanning, and no waiting; customers can even leave without paying up front. Opened in mid-November, this 7-Eleven, known as 'X-STORE 9,' is a fully autonomous retail space offering a radical new shopping experience that seemingly allows customers to exit without a traditional checkout. The innovation lies in its overhead infrastructure. The store is equipped with 140 ceiling-mounted hybrid cameras and LiDAR sensors that work together to create a sophisticated artificial intelligence tracking system, monitoring every product a customer picks up. The result is a shopping experience free of friction: patrons walk in, select their items, and simply exit. Within about 30 seconds of leaving, their payment is automatically processed through a pre-registered digital wallet, entirely eliminating queues and checkout counters. This convenience has delighted shoppers, especially at its university location, where the customer base primarily consists of students. However, one shopper, Jasper Hsu, expressed some reservations about its accuracy. "Even though it has the feature that detects what I pick up, it's generally not very accurate for us. We still have to scan items ourselves, essentially modifying the shopping cart. For checkout, you can't use cash; you can only self-scan the barcode and use mobile payment." Another shopper, Louis Wei, echoed similar concerns, "Having so many cameras isn't really effective. Although it claims to automatically detect and record what I take, it's often inaccurate." "So many surveillance cameras seem pretty normal. I heard they installed lots of cameras just for the tea eggs at the previous NCTU (National Chiao Tung University) unmanned store. You know, better safe than sorry," Wei added. As 7-Eleven’s ninth unmanned location, with five strategically placed on tech-savvy university campuses, X-STORE 9 represents a significant step in redefining convenience for the next generation. This shop is also the island’s first automated micro-warehouse for in-store package retrieval."
