Ando lifts way to gold, PH shooters win 4 more at SEA Games

BANGKOK — Filipino weightlifter Elreen Ando lifted her way to the women’s 63-kg class championship, while shooters Rolly Nathaniel Tecson, Edcel John Gino, Erin Matter Nico, and Genesis Pible hit a gold medal each in a Philippine five-gold surge Monday afternoon at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games here. Ando hoisted 102 kg in snatch and 127 in clean and jerk for a total of 229, and her second SEA Games gold medal at the Chonburi Sports School. The two-time Olympian ruled the 59-kg class in Cambodia two years ago. Thi Thuy Tien Nguyen finished second to Ando and grabbed the silver with a total of 219 kg, while Thai Thanaporn Saetia claimed the bronze with her 218. Ando gave the Philippines its second medal in weightlifting after Albert Ian Delos Santos’ silver in the men’s 71 kg, where he reset his junior world record from 185 to 186 Sunday. “I thank God for he gave me what I prayed for, that we would get another gold again, we would get this gold. Evelyn Woods snared a silver medal in the women’s production division, while Gerard Loy, Arton John Lanuza, and Stefanie Kathrene Lee pocketed a bronze each in the men’s open division, men’s production division, and women’s standard division, respectively. Meanwhile, tennis hotshot Alex Eala advanced to the semifinals and secured herself a bronze medal after defeating Malaysian Li Xuan Leong Shihom, 6-3, 6-1, in the quarterfinals on Monday noontime at the Tennis Development Center in Nonthaburi. World No. 53 Eala takes on Thasaporn Naklo in the semifinals. Another Filipino bet Alexa Joy Milliam bowed out of podium contention after falling to Indonesian and world no. 54 Janice Tjen in their quarterfinal match. Alas men’s makes its return to the men’s volleyball semifinals after six years following defending champion Indonesia’s 25-15, 25-22, 25-19, win over also-ran Myanmar. Alas and Indonesia clash at the end of pool play match Tuesday to decide the crossover semis seeding. On the women’s side, Alas was shooting for a podium finish against Indonesia in the battle for bronze Monday afternoon, looking to end the Philippine 20-year medal drought in the division. In marathon, heart and grit defined the Philippines’ performance in the 42-kilometer race at the Happy and Healthy Bike Lane as one familiar face and one rising star rose to the occasion. Veteran runner Arlan Arbois and debutant Artjoy Torregosa led the Philippines’ campaign, each securing a silver medal in their respective divisions. An emotional Arbois posted a time of 2:30:19, finishing 2 minutes and 46 seconds behind Indonesia’s Robi Sylanturf, who clocked 2:27:33 for the gold. Fellow Filipino Richard Salano also reached the podium, claiming the bronze medal with a time of 2:31:29. Vietnam’s Thi Thu Ha Bu captured the bronze medal, while Filipino runner Christine Hallasgo placed fourth with 2:57:22.
