"Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum described Chile’s elections held on Sunday and won by Republican Party candidate Jose Antonio Kast as "a democratic vote”, while calling for reflection on the return of the right-wing in Latin America. During her morning conference on Monday in Mexico City, the Mexican leader was asked about recent electoral victories by the right-wing in countries such as Bolivia, Argentina and Chile, to which she said it was necessary to analyse the particular contexts of each nation. "Each country has to be analyzed. Evidently we want there to be more governments close to the people, but for decisions to always be made democratically. In the case of Chile it was a democratic vote. The people of Chile chose who they want to govern them," the president said. "I think this is a moment of reflection for progressive movements in Latin America, about why these circumstances are occurring. I believe this is not going to happen in Mexico because: number one, there is a lot of popular support for the government, because we are delivering and we have not betrayed what we committed to," she added, urging analysis of "what happened in Chile." Regarding tariffs ranging from 5% to 50% that will affect more than 1,400 products, including clothing, metals and auto parts, she said these "are for the countries with which we do not have a trade agreement." "We are in talks with all countries [with which there is no trade agreement]. We do not want hostility with any country; rather, these are simply decisions that are taken in agreement with different business or industrial sectors in our country, from small to large, to strengthen employment and the development of Mexico. And in all cases we have dialogue with South Korea, with China, with Vietnam," she explained. The president added that the new tariffs will take effect on January 1st and are expected to generate 30 billion Mexican pesos a year, approximately $1,667 billion dollars."
