'Wound reopened today' - Gaza recovery operations begin to retrieve war dead from rubble *DISTRESSING*

"Civil Defence crews in Gaza began search operations for the remains of the missing under the rubble of houses, using small-scale equipment and machinery. Monday's footage shows machinery lifting rubble from the Abu Ramadan family residence and the recovery of a victim's remains, with family members present to attempt to identify the body. "Victims remain under the rubble. Our capabilities are minimal. We are operating with just one small excavator, coordinated through the ICRC," noted Civil Defence spokesperson Mahmoud Basal. "We appeal to the international community and mediators to exert a real effort for Palestinian victims, equal to that made for Israeli bodies," he added. "We face constant threats from unexploded ordnance in the rubble and risk of infection from handling decomposed bodies," he continued. A relative of the Abu Ramadan family, Iman Salem, described the emotional toll of the operation. "The wound has reopened today, it feels like they died all over again. Two years have not made us forget them at all". The General Directorate of Civil Defence in Gaza had previously announced the start of the search operations, in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross. It noted that the operations are being undertaken “with the participation of the Arab Authority for the Reconstruction of Gaza, Emergency Committees, the Rapid Response Directorate, Criminal Evidence and Forensic Medicine, alongside the Ministries of Health and Endowments, the families of the martyrs, and the Council of Tribes and Clans." The Directorate reported that the search operations began with the rubble of the Abu Ramadan family home, which it said had been sheltering around 60 displaced persons, including women, children and the elderly. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, the war's death toll stands at approximately 70,663, with over 171,139 injured. Since the ceasefire began, 632 bodies had been recovered from the rubble, at the time of publication. "
