"Dozens of farmers took to the streets of Avignon on Monday to protest controversial government culling policies that mandate the slaughter of cattle and small livestock infected wth nodular bovine dermatosis. Footage shows protesters chanting as a convoy of tractors moves through city streets, honking their horns and displaying signs such as 'no to total slaughter' and 'angry farmers’. "All the animals in the herd are being exterminated, even though they can be vaccinated. However, the state has implemented a policy contrary to the vaccination policy, which is to euthanise the entire herd. We oppose this approach to managing the crisis," stated farmer Didier Burn. He also accused the government of opting for a 'total slaughter' policy in order to avoid export restrictions on vaccinated animals, warning that the measures have severely impacted farmers' livelihoods. The farmers' movement started after the government decided to euthanise 200 cows with lumpy skin disease in southern France. Protests were also held against meat imports, which could potentially harm local production and market competitiveness. Measures such as culling mandates, environmental restrictions, and trade liberalisation with South American countries have intensified the pressure, particularly for small and medium-sized farms. The protest is part of a series of actions by agricultural communities across France."
