Rohri Station: Sindh agrees to share up-gradation cost with Ministry

ISLAMABAD: The government of Sindh has agreed with the Ministry of Railways to share the up-gradation cost of Rohri Station, which has been finalized in close collaboration with the Provincial government. While chairing a high-level meeting on Sindh-related Pakistan Railways (PR) projects, Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi on Monday revealed that the Chief Minister of Sindh has agreed with the Ministry of Railways to share 50 percent cost of the Rohri Railway Station Up-gration Project. He said that his ministry has finalized the project for which tenders will be issued within the next few weeks. During the meeting, the minister also discussed and reviewed projects on the Sukkur Railway Division infrastructure and passenger facilities. The minister stated that, in line with the directives of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the Pakistan Railways has announced the launch of major railway development projects in Sindh in collaboration with the Chief Minister of Sindh. After the successful up-gradation of Karachi Cantt Railway Station, the government has shifted focus to the up-gradation of Rohri Railway Station. A comprehensive master plan for the up-gradation of Rohri Station has been prepared. Tenders for the project will be issued this month. The Rohri up-gradation project will be implemented with the support of the Sindh Government. The project’s cost will be shared equally, with 50 percent funded by the Sindh government and 50 percent by Pakistan Railways. The up-gradation work is expected to be completed by June next year. Upon completion, Rohri Railway Station will be among the most modern and best-equipped railway stations in the country, serving more than 20,000 passengers daily. The Railway Minister emphasized the need to enhance facilities to accommodate the increasing footfall and declared Rohri as a major operational junction of Pakistan Railways. In a major announcement for the people of Sindh, Sukkur Railway Station will be restored to its original historical and aesthetic condition. The refurbishment and up-gradation of Sukkur Express rakes will also be completed soon. The Chief Minister of Sindh assured full support for the Rohri project and other ongoing development initiatives. Special attention will also be given to converting unmanned railway crossings into manned ones to ensure passenger safety. The Railway Minister welcomed the cooperation of the Sindh Government in all these initiatives. In a letter, the Ministry of Railways has asked the Sindh Food Authority to allow inspections to ensure high standards of food quality at railway stations, as there will be no compromise on passenger food safety.
