Rome opens two new metro stations at Colosseum and Porta Metronia

New Metro C stations, awaited for years, will showcase archaeological discoveries that their construction has brought to light. Rome's new Metro C subway stations at the Colosseum and Porta Metronia are scheduled to open to the public Tuesday 16 December at 16.00, the city said. A key feature of the two new metro stations - whose previously announced opening dates were delayed - will be the display of ancient Roman artefacts unearthed during construction work. Rome mayor Roberto Gualtieri is expected to visit the new subway stations on Tuesday morning with Italy's transport minister Matteo Salvini and culture minister Alessandro Giuli. In recent months the Metro C construction site on Via dei Fori Imperiali has been completely dismantled, after years, with the two entrances of the new Colosseo metro station, on either side of the street, visible but sealed off. With the opening of the Colosseo station, Metro C will connect with Metro B. Construction on the Metro C subway station at Piazza Venezia in a major infrastructure scheme set to last about a decade. Since it started more than three decades ago, the Metro C project has been beset with difficulties, from massive funding overspends to lengthy delays due to red tape and archaeological discoveries. In July Rome received the definitive green light for the final design of the T2 section of the Metro C line, which includes the construction of four new subway stations.
