Bolstering Gulf ties - Chinese Wang Yi holds talks with Saudi Arabia's FM as Beijing calls Riyadh 'priority' for Middle East diplomacy

"China signalled a push to deepen ties with Saudi Arabia as the two countries' top diplomats met in Riyadh on Sunday, indicating closer cooperation on diplomacy, trade, and regional issues. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud as part of efforts to expand bilateral engagement. Wang Yi said China regards Saudi Arabia as a 'priority for Middle East diplomacy' and an important global partner. He highlighted expanding cooperation in energy investment and emerging sectors, and called for stronger coordination on multilateral platforms, including the United Nations, the G20 and BRICS. Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its commitment to the One-China principle and welcomed greater Chinese investment. Both sides reiterated their support for a "comprehensive and just settlement of the Palestinian issue," including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. Following the talks, the two sides signed a mutual visa waiver agreement covering holders of diplomatic, special and service passports, marking a further step in strengthening bilateral ties. The meeting comes as Wang Yi is on a three-nation Middle East tour that began in the United Arab Emirates and is expected to conclude in Jordan. He also met Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi in Riyadh on Sunday."
