"Aleppo's Monastery of the Holy Land opened its Christmas village on Monday. Footage shows fireworks displays and performances by local scout troupes, with visitors seen enjoying the festivities and taking pictures. Parish priest Father Bahjat Qarah Qash said it was to 'bring smiles to the faces of children and families' - as well as helping local businesses out. Edward Primo, head of the scouts, called it 'a landmark event at the national level', with a "unique festive atmosphere through children's entertainment and displayed handicrafts as well as a variety of delicious foods." Christmas is celebrated by Catholics and other Western denominations on December 25. Since the takeover of the country last December, Syrian minority groups - such as Christians, Alawites and Druze - have reported violence against them, despite promises of 'inclusive government'. The Syrian transitional administration pledged to investigate after pro-government groups were blamed."
