Boots – a military drama with LGBTQ+ themes, set in the early 90s, during the era when the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy was still in place in the US army – was largely well-received by critics, landing an enviable 90% critical score on the reviews site Rotten Tomatoes . It also made Netflix’s chart of most-watched shows in 73 countries around the time of its release, though it did prove controversial among more conservative viewers, with the Pentagon’s spokesperson going as far as branding Boots “woke garbage” . On Monday evening, it was first reported by Deadline that Netflix had made the decision not to renew Boots for a second season, despite its popularity, prompting disappointment from its cast. Ana Ayora, who plays Captain Fajaro, lamented on her Instagram story: “This is the end of our mission. With great honour, deep gratitude and heart, I salute you all for supporting us and this beautiful much needed story. “Captain Fajardo, this experience, these humans, this opportunity expanded my life. I am forever changed.” Ana Ayora as Captain Fajaro in Boots Blake Burt, who plays John Bowman, was similarly disappointed, telling his followers: “I’m sorry we won’t be doing a round two for Boots, but thank you all for the love and support throughout this show. I made a family for life, and we made something beautiful. “Sometimes these things happen and it’s out of our control, but I hope this show touched your heart and you find that strength deep in your soul to always overcome, believe in yourself, but ultimately lead with love no matter what.” Alongside a screenshot of Boots’ Rotten Tomatoes page, he noted: “90% folks. It made a mark on people, and I couldn’t be more proud of everyone involved.” Blake Burt as John Bowman in Boots “It’s unfortunate,” he added. “But hey, it made a mark on people’s hearts around the world. Love you all.” Dominic Goodman, who plays the character Isaiah Nash, also wrote that he “gained so much from this show”, including “new brothers, new understanding of my own family history with the Marines and a taste of what I’m capable of as an actor”. “This job pushed me, it grew me and I’m grateful to have gotten such an amazing experience,” he enthused. “Thank you to everyone who’s watched! And more blessings on the way!” Boots’ final episode did end on something of a cliffhanger, so its rumoured cancellation may come as a surprise to many fans, particularly after lead actor Miles Heizer enthused to Variety that he’d “do it for 10 seasons if they let us” .
