Philippine rowers deliver gold, bronze at SEA Games

BANGKOK — Paris Olympic rower Joanie Delgaco and partner Kristine Paraon, as well as substitute Feiza Jane Lenton, topped the 33rd Southeast Asian Games women’s double sculls Tuesday morning, to spearhead the Philippine campaign on Day 7 of the biennial meet with a gold medal at the Royal Thai Navy Rowing and Canoeing Training Center in Rayong Province, Bang Phai Reservoir. Delgaco and Paraon clocked eight minutes and 16.976 seconds, defeating home bets Sukkaew Rawiwan and Chaempudsa Parisa by almost five seconds (8:21.634) for the gold. Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Van Anh and Pham Thi Bich Ngoc took the bronze with a clocking of 8:26.447. It’s a two-medal spurt for the Philippine rowing team after Tokyo Olympian Cris Nievarez pocketed the bronze in the men’s single sculls with a time of 8:22.121. “Last night it felt like the bronze was really hard to get, but before I went to sleep, I told myself, ‘When it’s the Lord who’s working, it truly is incredible, nothing is impossible,” said Delgaco, who raised his SEA Games gold haul to two after a lightweight doubles sculls conquest at the 2019 edition in Manila. “We really didn’t expect this gold because our opponents were also very strong, but we truly just trusted one another and the training we went through,” said Paraon. Delgaco and Paraon gave the Philippines its 26th gold medal laced with 40 silvers and 82 bronzes, ranking sixth at press time Tuesday afternoon. Meanwhile, the Philippine aquathlon team captured two silvers and one bronze. Kira Ellis, Kim Mangrobang and Erika Burgos finished second in the women’s relay final for the first silver with a time of 00:51:46, 23 seconds, while Iñaki Lorbes, Josh Ramos and Kim Remolino came in third in the men’s relay in 00:47:32 for the one bronze. Ellis, Remolino, Matthew Justine Hermosa and Raven Alcoseba clocked in 01:04.58 to place second in the mixed team event and for the second silver of the national team. In tennis, Alex Eala advanced to the gold medal match after dispatching Thai opponent Thasaporn Naklo, 6-1, 6-4, in the semifinal at the Tennis Development Center on Tuesday. A bronze medalist at the 2022 Vietnam Games, World No. 53 Eala guns for her first SEA Games gold against Thai Mananchaya Sawangkaew in the final on Wednesday. Advancing to the gold medal match, too, is Tyron Jamborillo, who defeated Myanmar’s Myat Moe Saw, 3-0, in men’s 45 kg semifinal in muay thai at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium. In men’s volleyball, the semifinal-bound Alas Pilipinas yielded to reigning champ Indonesia, 17-25, 25-27, 24-26, to close its group phase campaign. The Group B second seed Filipinos will face the eventual top seed in Group A, while Indonesia will battle the second seed in the crossover semifinals on Thursday.
