Sea of sweetness - Visitors flock to China’s Guangxi to witness golden harvest season of persimmons

"The landscape in the ancient town of Gongcheng, Guangxi, southern China, has transformed into a living masterpiece of flaming red and gold, showcasing the harvest of the region's most celebrated treasure: the persimmon. Footage captured on Monday in Hongyan Village, Lianhua Town, reveals plump persimmons hanging from branches like natural lanterns, while many freshly picked fruits are neatly arranged on bamboo trays to dry. From a distance, the scene resembles an orange-red ocean that stretches endlessly. Like thousands of illuminated lanterns, the vibrant red fruits glow under the sun, clustering densely on branches as tourists pose for photos beside the persimmon trees. For visitors, the experience is immersive in ‘China's Hometown of Moon Persimmons.’ They can wander through terraced orchards while delighting in the sweet, earthy scent of ripe fruit in the air. Tourist Xiao Lian remarked, “I came from Foshan, and I think this place is absolutely beautiful; this is my third visit." Xiao Cai shared, "I'm from Guangdong, and I saw this place on social media. We drove here for four hours, and it has certainly been worth it." Tourist Hua Hua added, "I travelled from Guangzhou to Guangxi… Coming here has been a delightful surprise because the persimmons are even more stunning than I imagined." During the harvest season, local stalls offer sweet persimmon cakes and other delicacies. Dried persimmons are versatile, serving as both a sweet, chewy snack and an ingredient to enhance baked goods. This abundant harvest celebration began in September and will continue until February next year. As of mid-December, the persimmon season has drawn over 1.5 million tourists."
