ARCHBISHOP of Manila Cardinal Jose F. Advincula urged the faithful during the first day of the nine-day Simbang Gabi (dawn Mass) to be welcoming and not to shun people. During his homily at the Manila Cathedral on Tuesday, Advincula underscored the power of the words “Welcome Home.” He emphasized that the church is not “for the perfect,” countering some churchgoers who believe that only the “clean” and “worthy” may enter the church, and warning against limiting God’s mercy. “The Lord made it clear that the church is open for all. No one is shunned, and no one is forgotten,” he said in Filipino, warning that when people feel judged or excluded, they may stop coming to church. “At school or at work, who are the people you avoid? In your community, who remains unnoticed? In the parish, who needs attention, care, and concern?” he said, imploring the faithful to be more welcoming. He added that the Simbang Gabi is a time for reflection and repentance. “Let us ask the Lord to expand our hearts and minds. May we be a church that welcomes and embraces groups instead of isolating, listens instead of judging, and reflects the love of Christ. Everyone is included in this,” Advincula said. ALLEN LIMOS
