The Director General of Finland’s Social Insurance Institution (Kela), Lasse Lehtonen , has taken extended medical leave until the end of May 2026 after being diagnosed with a serious illness while on a work trip to Brussels. Vertti Kiukas , outgoing chair of Kela’s board, confirmed on Tuesday that Lehtonen returned to Finland via an ambulance flight on Saturday. He remains under medical treatment in Finland.
