More people at risk of poverty in Finland

A total of 782,300 persons belonged to household-dwelling units at risk of poverty in Finland in 2024 and the number is 14.2 per cent of the dwelling population, according to Statistics Finland. The number grew by 45,500 persons from the year before. There were 137,400 children in household-dwelling units at risk of poverty in 2024. This was 13.8 per cent of all children in the dwelling population. The number grew by 14,300 persons from the year before. Meanwhile, income differentials grew among the people in Finland in 2024 compared to the previous year, The average income of the population in the lowest-income decile fell in real terms by 0.6 per cent and that of the highest-income decile grew by 3.5 per cent. The real income level of medium income earners was 2.3 per cent higher than in the previous year. Real income grew again in 2024, while in two previous years it had contracted because of high inflation. The real income of the lowest-income decile went down from 2023 to 2024. In other respects, real income grew throughout the income distribution. Relative income differentials grew and the Gini coefficient received the value 28.4 in 2024. It was 0.5 percentage points higher than in 2023.
