LG polls in Punjab: LHC seeks replies from respondents by 19th

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday sought replies from the respondents by December 19 in a petition of Jamat-i-Islami (JI) challenging the government’s failure to hold local government elections in the province. The petitioner a JI leader Emir Ziauddin Ansari argued that the inordinate delay in the local government elections had been affecting local development and the accountability process in the province. He expressed regret that the provincial government failed to fulfil its constitutional obligation by not holding the LG elections. The petitioner asked the court to direct the respondents to take immediate steps for conducting local government elections in Punjab. He also prayed to the court to penalize the authorities responsible for failing to meet their constitutional obligations. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
