National hero - Parents of man who disarmed Bondi Beach shooter visit St George Hospital on his surgery day

"The parents of Ahmed al-Ahmed, the Syrian-born fruit shop owner who tackled one of the Bondi Beach gunmen on Sunday, arrived at St George Hospital in Sydney on Wednesday as he prepared for surgery. Footage shows the couple walking to the emergency hall before leaving with a few relatives and getting into their vehicle. Ahmed became a local hero after a video of him bravely tackling and disarming a gunman during the Bondi Beach shooting went viral. Recognised by neighbours as a 'kind-hearted, gentle and selfless man', he had been running a specialist convenience store in Sutherland, located in Sydney's southern suburbs, since 2021, according to media reports. He is believed to have moved to Australia in 2006. The 44-year-old has received praise nationwide and from global leaders, while an online fundraiser for him has raised about 2.3 million AUD ($1.5 million). He is now recovering in the hospital from gunshot wounds to his shoulder and hand. The Bondi Beach attack left 16 people dead - including one gunman - and more than 40 others wounded, according to officials. Among those killed were Rabbi Eli Schlanger and a Holocaust survivor, community leaders said. Police later identified the attackers as father and son, Sajid Akram, 50, and Naveed Akram, 24. Sajid Akram was shot dead by police at the scene, while his son was arrested and remains in custody. Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned what he called a 'cruel attack by vile terrorists' and urged Canberra to "fight against the enormous wave of anti-Semitism which is plaguing Australian society." Australia has some of the world's strictest gun laws and has largely avoided mass shootings for decades. Authorities said the motive remains under investigation."
