"China has accused Japan of habitually distorting facts and refusing to correct its mistakes regarding historical issues. In a daily press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun slammed Tokyo's actions and comments on the ongoing Taiwan's issue. "We urge some in Japan to stop spreading false narratives, face up to the history, reflect on and correct the wrongdoings, retract the erroneous remarks, honour the commitments, and act responsibly," he stated. Responding to Japan’s claim of being a 'peace-loving country', Guo accused Tokyo of 'concocting false narratives'. "They depicted Japan's war of aggression against Asian neighbours as 'the liberation of Asia', downplayed the horrendous Nanjing Massacre as 'the Nanjing incident', whitewashed the infamous Unit 731 as a 'public health research unit', and dismissed forced labor and 'comfort women' as 'voluntary acts'," he said. Earlier on Saturday, December 13, China held a memorial ceremony for the Nanjing Massacre, which President Xi Jinping did not attend. This comes amid ongoing dispute over Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's comment that a 'survival-threatening situation' for Tokyo may emerge in case of China using military force against Taiwan. On European Union plans to use frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine, Guo said China "opposes unilateral sanctions that violate international law and lack the authorisation of the UN Security Council," urging efforts to create 'favourable' conditions for negotiations to achieve a political settlement."
