'Welcome back home' - Kenya's Turkana community celebrates unique heritage at Tobong’u Lore festival

"Dozens of locals gathered on Tuesday in Lodwar, Kenya, for the Tobong’u Lore Cultural Festival, an annual event celebrating the rich traditions of the Turkana community and neighbouring groups. Footage shows participants performing traditional dances and songs in vibrant attire, bringing to life the spirit of the region and its people. “All Ataker come here to display their culture: the way they sing, their languages, the way Ataker dresses,” said attendee, Edina Atot, “This is also a way for us to teach ourselves about the Ateker mode of dressing, foods, and fruits.” The festival, whose name means 'Welcome Back Home', invites participants to reconnect with their roots and with one another. “The Itengi brings every community together. People from Karamoja come to meet the Turkana community, and others from far places like Uganda and Sudan can meet together,” said participant Charles Awuwi. The Turkana people also highlighted the region’s global significance. In 1984, the world’s most complete early human skeleton, known as 'Turkana Boy', was discovered near Lake Turkana. Tobong’u Lore plays a vital role in preserving culture, passing traditions to future generations, and promoting peace among communities."
