'Ms VdL, you're turning Europe into a laughing stock!' - MEPs condemn Commission chief's 'legally risky' frozen assets plan

"European Parliament Members (MEPs) unleashed a blast of criticism against European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen and her policy at the European Parliament session in Strasbourg on Wednesday. EC President's 'strategy of appeasement with [US President Donald] Trump' was denounced as meaningless and even 'undermining' the European Union’s (EU) sovereignty. "The new national security strategy of Donald Trump is neither a misunderstanding nor a whim. It is a declaration of hostility against the European Union. It identifies us as adversaries, legitimises the far right, and embraces a world governed by autocrats and unscrupulous billionaires,"  Iratxe Garcia Perez of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats stated. "Trump has declared war on Europe," Irene Montero of The Left group said. "But no, you don't sanction the United States, you obey them, increase military spending because Trump orders it, reintroduce military service so that our sons and daughters are the infantry of the United States' wars. Your hypocrisy is killing Europe." Meanwhile, Tomasz Froelich of the Europe of Sovereign Nations Group slammed von der Leyen’s foreign policy, which has turned the EU into a 'laughingstock'. The MEP emphasised that peace efforts on the conflict in Ukraine were ‘'orpedoed' while diplomatic relations with the US, China and Russia were severed. "You are outraged by Trump's peace plan. Where was your peace plan all these years?" he said. "Now you are negotiating a bit. Why not earlier? Much would have been spared for Ukraine and for us, too. About three years of recession. For what?" "For golden oligarch toilets, for billions to a corrupt leadership in Kiev, who, from their own people, are fleeing and for 19 sanction packages that hurt us more than Russia. This is not a peace plan, this is stupidity. Your entire approach is a geopolitical kindergarten," he continued. “You, Ms. von der Leyen, are making Europe weak." The concerns within MEPs follow the multimillion-dollar energy corruption scandal which has engulfed some of Zelensky's closest allies. Other MEPs went on to question the plan to fund Ukraine with seized Russian frozen assets, describing it as ’legally highly risky’. "There is no such thing as free money. There is always a risk. And nobody thought about who will pay. Belgium was asked to carry all the waif alone, to bear as one member state and its taxpayers a disproportionate share of the legal and financial risk. How is that fair and realistic?" Assita Kanko of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group said. It comes after EU member states last week approved a regulation allowing Russian assets to remain frozen indefinitely, using an emergency 'qualified-majority' vote. The move is designed to ensure the funds remain locked until Russia pays for damages. The decision opens the door for the European Parliament to fast-track a proposed 'reparations loan' for Kiev, estimated to be worth between €90 billion and €140 billion. However, resistance within the bloc is growing. Belgium, which hosts the bulk of frozen Russian assets at the Euroclear clearing house in Brussels, has emerged as a leading critic, warning the plan is 'fundamentally wrong', legally risky, and could expose Europe to serious financial consequences. Opposition has since widened, with Italy, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary and Malta calling for 'alternative solutions' that carry 'significantly less risks' and could serve as a temporary bridge for Ukraine’s financing needs. They were joined by Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis, who urged the Commission to 'find other ways' to support Kiev. Meanwhile, Russia has condemned the EU plan, calling it 'outright robbery' and a 'legal nightmare' for the West. EU leaders are expected to take a final decision when they meet in Brussels on Thursday."
