Finland racism row - Orpo apologises to Asia for Finnish MPs' 'squinting gesture', admits EU cannot bypass Belgium on frozen assets

"Finnish PM Petteri Orpo said it was 'in no way acceptable' for two MPs to post on pictures of themselves doing derogatory 'squinting gestures', after apologising to Asian nations the previous night. "Let's start again by saying that this action was in no way acceptable. I do not accept any form of racism and because this has caused damage to Finland's image, which is why I think the government reacted very strongly on my behalf yesterday by sending a public apology to these key countries, Japan, South Korea, China, and in their own language," he said while arriving at the European Council. The two MPs - in the Finns Party, part of the governing coalition- were apparently posting the pictures in support of 2025 Miss Finland Sarah Dzafce who was stripped of her title for a similar photo. Orpo was also asked about 'bypassing' Belgium on the frozen assets row, after suggestions there could be a 'majority vote'. "The reality is, no. These funds are in Belgium, and understandably, this is such a significant issue for them that a solution must indeed be found with Belgium," he said. European leaders are set to debate the European Commission's plan to use frozen Russian assets for a $140bn 'reparations loan' for Ukraine, amid huge divisions within the bloc. Belgium - where the assets are held - and others have warned of the impact on investor confidence, the need for 'risk-sharing' and questioned the legality. Italy, Belgium, Malta and Bulgaria called for alternatives to be explored. Others like Hungary and Slovakia have highlighted the need to end the Ukraine conflict - rather than fund more weapons- as well as ongoing corruption scandals in Ukraine. On Wednesday, Hungary's Viktor Orban claimed 'victory', saying the loan plan was 'off the table'. Russia has called the move 'illegal' and 'theft'."
