"Brazil's Senate on Wednesday approved a bill that could reduce the prison sentence of former President Jair Bolsonaro, cutting it from 27 years to just over two years, despite resistance from the Supreme Court and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The bill passed with 48 senators voting in favour, 25 against and one abstention, Senate President Davi Alcolumbre announced. Supporters said the legislation addresses what they described as excessive sentencing. Senator Tereza Cristina stated that the bill would "repair serious injustices committed against many who are imprisoned." Senator Alessandro Vieira also backed the measure, criticising what he called a punitive approach. "With a way of determining punishment that is driven by vengeance, justice without credibility is not justice," he stated. Opponents argued the bill risks downplaying the seriousness of the crimes. Senator Jaques Wagner warned that "minimising what happened on January 8 is an invitation for the events that occurred to be repeated at other times." Senator Randolfe Rodrigues said those involved in coup attempts must face consequences, adding that if such actions succeed, "there is no longer any democratic order." The bill was approved by the lower house last week and now goes to Lula, who has previously stated that he intends to veto the measure. Bolsonaro began serving his sentence last month for plotting a coup after losing the 2022 election. A preliminary draft had proposed full amnesty, but lawmakers later ruled this out."
