"President of Venezuela's National Assembly Jorge Rodriguez called US President Donald Trump's accusations of alleged theft of oil by Venezuela 'absurd but extremely dangerous', during a new session of the National Council for Sovereignty and Peace held in Caracas this Thursday. "If you review what [the White House deputy chief of staff] Stephen Miller said yesterday and what Donald Trump said, it is exactly the same as what [opposition leader] Maria Corina Machado said (…) on the occasion of the shame of the Nobel," he stressed. On Wednesday, Miller claimed that Venezuela's oil industry was originally developed by the United States and argued that the nationalisation decreed by Caracas in 1976 constituted, in his view, 'the greatest theft' suffered by the North American country. Council member Nicolas Maduro Guerra warned that Venezuela must stay wary in the current situation. "At this moment we are not in a position for naivety, the most powerful army in the world is threatening us right now and this is not something to be taken lightly," he said. Maduro Guerra called for channeling "national indignation into a productive force" to resist US threats. The speakers agreed on the need to consolidate a block of international coordination that defends Venezuela’s right to decide its own destiny without interference. The remarks followed comments by Donald Trump, who said the US military deployment in the Caribbean would continue until Venezuela returns oil and other assets Washington claims were previously taken."
