Fiery protests erupt in Dhaka following death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi

"Protests erupted across Dhaka on Thursday following the death of prominent youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, as demonstrators called for justice and accountability for his killing. Footage shows protesters gathering outside burning buildings in the Karwan Bazar area. Firefighters can later be seen extinguishing the flames as army personnel cordoned off the area. The two newspapers targeted in the attacks, Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, are among Bangladesh's largest media outlets. Protesters accused the media outlets of being aligned with India, where former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken refuge since her government was toppled during last year's uprising. Hadi, a vocal critic of neighbouring India and Hasina, was shot by masked attackers last week while leaving a mosque in Dhaka. He later died of his injuries while undergoing treatment in Singapore. His killing has sparked protests across the country. Hadi's death comes just days after Bangladeshi authorities announced a date for the country’s first national elections since the 2024 uprising. Several staff members were trapped inside burning buildings before being rescued by emergency responders. There were no reported fatalities among journalists in the fire at the time of publication."
