Race for the pumps! - Long queues at filling stations in La Paz after govt scraps fuel subsidy

"Long queues of cars formed at petrol stations in La Paz on Wednesday after Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz announced the removal of the fuel subsidy.
Locals queued at the pumps to fill up after President Paz, who took office last month, cancelled long-standing fuel subsidies in a bid to cut debt in public accounts. “Price hikes in all products are going to rise, this is what people are already talking about. So people are susceptible to the whole situation,” said German Chavez, a local citizen.
People also queued at markets to buy basic goods, with many locals frustrated over the measure and predicting it would cause inflation. “Everything is going to start increasing twice as much and they are going to sell more expensive than what they were selling before. I am a little worried about the economic situation right now,” added Gabriela Ruiz, another citizen. With the removal, Bolivia’s new president ends 20 years of fixed prices, as fuel will be removed from the list of substances controlled by the government and put on the free market."
