What Toronto Blue Jays' latest signing means for bullpen's biggest question mark

The Toronto Blue Jays missed out on the likes of Edwin Diaz and Robert Suarez, but were still able to add an intriguing bullpen arm. After initial reports emerged late last week, the Blue Jays confirmed Monday that they had signed 35-year-old Tyler Rogers to a three-year, $37 million deal. The submariner impressed in a big way in 2025, posting a dazzling 1.98 ERA in a combined 77.1 innings split between the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets. What immediately stands out when scanning Rogers' 2025 stats, however, is that over his 77.1 innings, he had just 48 strikeouts. Unlike several other relief pitchers the Jays showed interest in, Rogers isn't the type to blow the doors off opposing batters. In fact, his fastball sits in the low 80s. The lower speed, paired with his unique throwing position, often makes hitters uncomfortable and forces them into soft contact. What's interesting about the Rogers signing is what it will mean for Jeff Hoffman moving forward. Hoffman, who was signed to a three-year, $33 million deal last offseason, struggled in a closing role with the Blue Jays throughout 2025. Shortly after the World Series had commenced, GM Ross Atkins told reporters that Hoffman was open to moving into a set-up role in the bullpen should it be necessary. Given the amount of money the Blue Jays have already spent this offseason, along with their continued interest in Bo Bichette and Kyle Tucker, it seems very unlikely that they'll hand out another big ticket to any available closers still on the free-agent market. As good a pitcher as Rogers has shown to be throughout his seven-year MLB career, his stuff doesn't really fit in a closing role. Through his time in the bigs, he's picked up just 19 saves. This seems to suggest that Hoffman will be given another opportunity in the closing role to open up the 2026 season. It will be up to the 32-year-old to be more consistent when called upon to ensure he holds onto that role. If he struggles, a potential internal candidate such as Louis Varland may be given the opportunity.
