"Colombia reached a historic record in beef exports during 2025, driven especially by demand from the Chinese market. The country shipped 25,105 tons of beef abroad for a value of 121.5 million dollars, according to figures from the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) and the Economic Studies Office of Fedegan, Colombia. In footage filmed this Wednesday, December 17, dozens of Brahman cows can be seen being cared for and fed by ranchers. Colombia is experiencing one of its best moments in agricultural exports so far in 2025. Colombian beef has established itself as one of the most exported products, and China has become the growth engine by boosting its demand. "I believe China could easily be buying 4 or 5 billion dollars, it is extremely important for us. This year we are doing well, despite the exchange rate," stated Jose Felix Lafourie, President of the Colombian Cattle Ranchers Federation. China remains the main buyer of Colombian beef, with more than 14,500 tons purchased by that Asian market. "Today we are over 100 million dollars selling to a single market. That is a record." The Andean country trades beef with more than 30 countries, including Algeria, Russia, Chile, and El Salvador. "We are in 37 countries, sometimes with live animals and other times with meat. What goes to China is all meat," explained Jose Felix. On the other hand, experts in the cattle sector highlight that part of this growth is due to genetic improvements in livestock and more efficient production systems, which have increased the quality of Colombian beef and its competitiveness in demanding markets such as China. "Pure animals have complete genes, to produce meat, they have the ability to convert food better, and ultimately that will be the meat that can be consumed," commented Orlando Ortega, Veterinarian Zootecnist. On May 9, 2013, a sanitary protocol was signed between Colombia and China establishing the health requirements for frozen beef exports, which was the first formal step in this process. After several years and Colombia regaining sanitary status, in 2023 China approved the sanitary protocol that enabled Colombian beef exports to the Chinese market. The first Colombian beef exports to China began in 2024, once the sanitary requirements were met and export establishments were authorized, and in 2025, a record was broken."
