"Every process of dialogue concerning the primary sector is important, provided it is not merely a formality. We want dialogue between farmers and the government, but the government continuously undermines it," said main opposition PASOK-Movement for Change spokesperson Kostas Tsoukalas, speaking on the radio station Ellada 94.3 on Friday. Tsoukalas stated that the prime minister, “with his latest statement, is essentially choosing to create an environment of confrontation.” He added: "We want these people to return to their homes, for this situation to de-escalate, but to do so with security—for their production, their income, and their families." He said that "the government wants them defeated," and had initially treated them as invisible, and later, when they took to the road blockades, it "first tried to discredit and criminalise them," and then "called them to dialogue as a token gesture, made with ultimatums and preconditions." He noted that PASOK’s position is that "no meaningful dialogue can take place unless the obligations of these people to the tax authorities, social security funds, banks, and funds are suspended."
