The Parliament on Friday approved the government budget proposal for the year 2026, said an official press release. The budget of 90.8 billion euros for the next year is about 1.6 billion euros more than the budget for 2025. On-budget revenue excluding net borrowing is estimated at EUR 81.5 billion, of which tax revenue accounts for around 84 per cent. The focus of taxation will be shifted from labour and entrepreneurship towards consumption and harmful activities. The 2026 Budget shows a deficit of about EUR 9.4 billion. Absent the one-off transfer of the National Housing Fund's cash to the budget, the on-budget deficit would be about EUR 11.7 billion. The Finance Committee increased appropriations in the budget by EUR 40 million. The appropriations are allocated to reducing the maintenance backlog in transport infrastructure, to national defence and strengthening comprehensive security, and to promoting culture and outdoor recreation. The 2026 Budget will apply from 1 January 2026.
