KARACHI: In a historic move towards modernisation and digitalisation of the municipal system, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced to launch a secure digital correspondence system equipped with QR codes. This step is being introduced to ensure transparency, authenticity and effective implementation of official documents, which will come into effect from December 22, 2025. Under the new system, a unique QR code will be inscribed on all official letters, notices and correspondence issued by the KMC, which any individual or institution will be able to verify from any location. This move will not only improve the internal affairs of the organisation but will provide citizens, institutions and other stakeholders with the facility of instant verification of official documents. This will eliminate the possibility of fake or fraudulent correspondence. Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab highlighting this new digital system said that the KMC was rapidly moving towards modern, transparent and technology-based governance with the QR code-based correspondence. The system is an important step towards securing government transactions and restoring public confidence in local government documents. The Mayor said that KMC is not limited to providing local government services, but also manages valuable government land, recreational places, markets, slums and other important sectors. The implementation of a digital and verifiable correspondence system was the need of the hour to secure government affairs, prevent misuse and eliminate fraudulent activities. He directed all KMC officers and departments to ensure strict implementation of this new system without any exception. He said that the implementation of the digital correspondence policy will be mandatory and will be enforced at all levels so that uniformity and effectiveness are maintained throughout the institution. This step will significantly reduce delays in government affairs, increase efficiency and KMC services will be delivered at a faster pace. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
