Death toll from Wang Fuk Court fire rises to 161

The death toll from last month's fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po has risen to 161 from 160 following DNA testing. Police Commissioner Joe Chow said on Saturday that forensic testing found the DNA remains of two bodies that were previously counted as one. The pair were a couple. He does not rule out the possibility that the death toll may rise even further as DNA tests are still underway. Chow also gave an update on the six people who were still unaccounted for on December 9. "Five of them were confirmed to have unfortunately died in the blaze, while the other person had already died in 2023," he said. "All of the reports filed with the casualty enquiry centre have been dealt with." Therefore, Chow said, the round-the-clock hotline will operate from just 7am to 11pm starting tomorrow, with its hours adjusted further later depending on the situation. He said that removal of scaffolding and mesh nets at Wang Fuk Court had begun last Friday but that the work could only be started on four of the eight blocks at the estate out of safety concerns. It is hard to tell when the work will be completed, Chow said, as they also have to conduct searches for evidence and human remains throughout the process. He said no members from the disaster victim identification unit deployed to the scene had sought mental support services but that the force would monitor the toll on them closely.
