Kylie Minogue's XMAS is officially this year's Christmas number one She’s only gone and done it – Kylie Minogue has nabbed this year’s Christmas number one with her festive hit XMAS. Kylie’s accolade is significant for many reasons, not least that it’s the Australian pop superstar’s first UK number one in more than 20 years, having last topped the charts with her sultry Slow back in 2003, continuing the winning streak she’s been on since Padam Padam led to a huge musical renaissance two years ago . It’s also the first time a fully new composition has topped the UK charts at Christmas since Ed Sheeran ’s Perfect in 2017, with subsequent years seeing LadBaby triumphing with his festive parodies of existing songs , in aid of food bank charities. Since LadBaby’s record-breaking run of four songs came to an end, Wham! ’s Last Christmas then topped the festive chart in both 2023 and 2024, making history as the first song to achieve the feat two years running . What’s also significant about Kylie’s number one is the fact that XMAS is an Amazon Music exclusive, meaning that unless you subscribe to that streaming service, there’s every chance you’ve never even heard the Grammy winner’s new Christmas tune. So, given all of the competition that’s out there, how exactly did she manage it? How did Kylie Minogue’s XMAS get the Christmas number one when it’s an Amazon Music exclusive? You might not realise it, but there is already a precedent for Amazon Music’s festive exclusives becoming chart hits. Ellie Goulding managed a number one – albeit the week after Christmas – with her cover of Joni Mitchell’s River back in 2019, and since then, original seasonal tunes by Sam Ryder and Tom Grennan have been serious contenders for the festive number one. Amazon Music will prioritise these tunes in its festive playlists – so every time someone asks their Alexa to “play Christmas music”, the chances are they’ll be served these tracks fairly early on, nestled among the usual suspects like Wham!, Mariah Carey and The Pogues (all those songs are also much older, too, meaning they need far more streams than more recent tracks to register on the chart ). “XMAS is featured across many of our Christmas music stations and playlists as well as other relevant editorial placements, including our Brand New Music playlist and Feeling Happy Radio, which helps to ensure maximum visibility,” Alex Nutton of Amazon Music UK recently told Music Week . “Strong playlisting combined with the high volume of music fans heading to Amazon Music to request XMAS, has significantly contributed to the song’s chart success.” Kylie Minogue performing at the Jingle Bell Ball earlier this month The difference with Kylie’s offering compared to her Amazon Music exclusive predecessors is that she’s gone above and beyond with XMAS, releasing physical editions of the track and releasing an official music video for it on YouTube, all of which counts towards its streaming figures. She also gave XMAS its TV debut earlier this month with a performance on the Strictly Come Dancing results show, backed by the series’ resident troupe of dancers: Then, there’s the fact that XMAS, echoing recent hits by Bruno Mars and Chappell Roan , comes equipped with its own easy-to-sing-along chorus and dance routine, which Kylie has been keen to push at every opportunity while promoting the track. And yes, that does make it very TikTok-friendly, too… @kylieminogue Oh how I LOVE seeing you do the XMAS dance ?? Please keep ‘em coming!! And don’t forget you can listen to XMAS exclusively on Amazon Music ❤️ ♬ XMAS (Amazon Music Original) - Kylie Minogue Check out the music video for this year’s Christmas number one, Kylie Minogue’s XMAS, below: READ MORE: Our Verdict On All Of The Must-Listen New Christmas Songs Released In 2025 21 Alternative Christmas Bangers To Freshen Up Your Festive Playlist The UK's Favourite Christmas Song Probably Isn't The One You Had In Mind
