"US Central Command (CENTCOM) released footage on Saturday showing what it said were coordinated strikes by US and Jordanian forces on more than 70 ISIS targets in Syria, involving over 100 precision-guided munitions. In a statement, CENTCOM said the operation targeted ISIS fighters, infrastructure and weapons sites. The exact date and locations of the footage could not be independently verified. US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said the strikes were carried out under 'Operation Hawkeye Strike', describing them as a direct response to an attack on US forces near Palmyra earlier this month. “US forces commenced Operation Hawkeye Strike in Syria to eliminate ISIS fighters, infrastructure, and weapons sites in direct response to the attack on US forces that occurred on December 13th in Palmyra, Syria,” Hegseth said. “This is not the beginning of a war it is a declaration of vengeance. The United States of America, under President Trump’s leadership, will never hesitate and never relent to defend our people,” he added. US President Donald Trump also commented on the operation, saying American forces were “inflicting very serious retaliation, just as I promised.” At the time of publication, the Syrian Interim Government had not issued any official comment on the US strikes. The Syrian Interim Government formally joined the international coalition against ISIS in November. The strikes follow an ambush near Palmyra last week in which US soldiers, partner forces and Syria’s internal security personnel were targeted by a gunman. US officials attributed the attack to ISIS."
