Marikina lawmaker questions ballooning Tumana water debt

MANILA, Philippines — Marikina District 1 Rep. Marcy Teodoro expressed concern over the ballooning debt of Barangay Tumana to Manila Water Services Inc., which has reached nearly P37.2 million and led to service disconnection on Dec. 18, 2025. On Saturday, Marcy, who served as mayor said that Tumana’s debt was only around P20 million during his term, adding that his administration had paid P8.8 million to reduce the balance and prevent water interruptions. “It is surprising that it has ballooned to almost P40 million now,” he said. The partial payment of P15 million made by current Mayor Maan Teodoro on Saturday, Dec. 20, restored water services to around 3,000 residents, with city officials overseeing the reopening of 13 water gate valves. Teodoro criticized the failure of officials in the past two years to manage the debt, implying accountability gaps that allowed the amount to swell.
