'We lost a treasure' - Massive crowds gather in Dhaka to honour deceased youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi

"Thousands of people paid their respects to Sharif Osman Hadi with a funeral prayer in Dhaka on Saturday, as Bangladesh observed a national day of mourning for the late prominent youth leader. Footage shows numerous people standing in long queues to join the prayer. Many carried Bangladeshi flags and wore headbands depicting the national flag. "We are losing a treasure; we cannot say when such a treasure will come to Bangladesh again. Because Hadis do not always come," local Khurshid Alam stated, adding that he has travelled 'a long way' to attend the funeral. Some criticised the Bangladeshi government for its failure to provide sufficient protection to the youth leader, emphasising that his killer is yet to be detained. "He (Sharif Osman Hadi) had expressed his fear long ago that he might be shot in the chest or head. Everyone in Bangladesh knows that Hadi was threatened with death, but even then, our law enforcement agencies could not take any steps for his safety," local Mostafa Kamal commented. "The responsibility for how the terrible terrorists are released lies with the legal advisor and the government," Alam added. Police officers can also be seen checking prayer attendees and their belongings, as an expanded force presence was deployed during the event. Hadi, a prominent youth leader who played a key role in the 2024 uprising that forced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power, died in the hospital from gunshot wounds sustained in an attack last week. The police investigation is underway. Hadi's death triggered a fresh wave of widespread protests across the country, with demonstrators calling for justice and accountability for his killing. His death comes just days after Bangladeshi authorities announced a date for the country's first elections since the 2024 uprising."
