LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Saturday sentenced PTI leaders Dr Yasmin Rashid, Ejaz Chaudry, Omar Sarfraz Cheema and Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed to 10-year prison terms in two more May 9 cases. Rana Mudassar, the counsel for the PTI leaders, confirmed the development to Dawn , saying the cases are related to the burning of police vehicles in Lahore’s Gulberg and the burning of a container near Kalma Chowk during the nationwide riots on May 9 following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan. The riots erupted across the country and went on for at least 24 hours. Protesters vandalised and torched government buildings and military installations, while also breaking into the residence of the Lahore corps commander. The state subsequently launched a crackdown against Imran and his party, booking the party founder and its leadership in multiple cases. Previously, verdicts have already been announced in several other cases arising from the May 9 unrest, including trials related to the attack on Shadman police station, violence at Sherpao Bridge, the burning of police vehicles near Rahat Bakery, and the torching of a Supreme Court judge’s squad vehicle near Jinnah House. Mudassar said ATC-III Judge Arshad Javed presided over the hearings for both cases today in Kot Lakhpat jail and sentenced the four PTI leaders to 10-year sentences in each case while acquitting 22 in the Gulberg case and five in the Kalma Chowk case.
