Angat, Ipo dams release water due to shear line

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Sunday that it has opened six gates of Angat and Ipo dams to release water as the shear line dumped rain in Luzon. As of 8 a.m., the reservoir water level (RWL) of Angat, the main source of water supply for Metro Manila and irrigation needs of its adjoining provinces, was at 212.52 meters (m), higher than its normal high water level (NHWL) of 212 meters. As a result, its three gates were opened with an outflow of 243 cubic meters per second (cms), Pagasa hydrologist Paolo Pamintuan told The Manila Times via Viber. He said Ipo dam also had its three spillway gates unlocked with an opening at 1.70m. Pamintuan said that the convergence of hot and cold air or shear line brought heavy rain in areas where the two dams are located. “The shear line has been affecting the eastern sections of Luzon and the two dams are located in this area,” he explained. Angat and Ipo dams are both located in Norzagaray, Bulacan.
