"Civil Defence teams began operations to search for and recover the remains of Palestinian victims in Gaza's Khan Younis, who were killed in Israeli airstrikes during the recent conflict in the enclave. Footage filmed on Saturday features an excavator removing debris from the house of the Abu Hilal family. Civil Defence personnel and locals are working together to dig and remove rubble by hand. Raed Saqr, the head of the body recovery operations in the Al Amal neighbourhood, said, "The work began at this home, with numerous homes waiting for us, dozens of them. In light of our available agenda, 13 homes within the Al Amal neighborhood are inserted in the work plan at this time." Saqr shed light on the challenges that undermine the efforts of the Civil Defence teams, foremost of which is the lack of equipment, with only one excavator available for the entire operation. "One of the challenges we encounter is to work in tight spaces, let alone that the bodies inside the defined homes have been martyred for a long time and may have decomposed accordingly. We are, therefore, searching for remains, not complete bodies," the man added. Huda Abu Hilal, the sole survivor of the bombing that targeted her family’s home, described the moments of the attack. "I was on the same floor as my family. My mother asked me to go downstairs to empty the bucket. I was going down the staircase, the missile hit, and the entire house collapsed," she recalled, adding, "I came across a small opening through which I managed to escape into the street after the smell of gunpowder had cleared. I knew where my family had been, so I went out to search for them, but all I found were body parts." According to the Palestinian Press Agency SAFA, "More than 9,000 martyrs remain trapped underneath the rubble of homes across the Gaza Strip". The ceasefire, effective on October 10, is part of a broader agreement between Hamas and Israel under the '20-point Trump Plan'. The plan entails an immediate cessation of fighting, the release of all hostages, both living and deceased, and the provision of humanitarian aid."
