Bomb joke leads to passenger offloading at NAIA Terminal 3

MANILA, Philippines — A Singapore-bound traveler was barred from his flight on Saturday, December 20, after making a bomb joke during a security check at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3. The Philippine National Police-Aviation Security Group (Avsegroup) reported that when security personnel asked the unidentified passenger what was inside his bag, he replied, "May dala akong granada (I am carrying a grenade).” The Avsegroup immediately deployed its Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Canine Unit to inspect the passenger's luggage. The sweep yielded no explosives or incendiary materials. The airline offloaded the passenger and placed him on a blacklist for future flights. While the airline management declined to pursue legal action, the passenger was prevented from boarding his scheduled flight. Avsegroup chief PBGen. Dionisio Bartolome emphasized that bomb-related jokes have no place in airport facilities. He reaffirmed that the Avsegroup maintains a zero-tolerance policy and will continue to take immediate action to ensure the safety and security of all airport operations. Under Presidential Decree No. 1727, making bomb jokes or false bomb threats is a criminal offense in the Philippines. Individuals who maliciously disseminate false information or make threats concerning explosives can face up to five years in prison, a fine of up to P40,000, or both, at the discretion of the court.
