'Looks like a dream' - Locals in Jisr al-Shughur celebrate Christmas tree lighting after years of hiatus due to Syria war

"Christians in Idlib province's city of Jisr al-Shughur, in northwestern Syria, celebrated lighting of the Christmas tree on Saturday evening, during an event postponed for several years due to the war in the country. Footage shows the tree being lit with attendees enjoying fireworks, Christmas carols and scout orchestra's performance. "This event happening right now looks like a dream for us. When we were decorating, many people came to us after noticing what we were doing, because the village is on a main road. We were happy because we created something beautiful," an attendee shared "This happiness is not limited to any specific group or denomination - it is a joy for all Syrians, especially as we prepare to celebrate," another local added. In December 2024, the current transitional government took power in Damascus, with Ahmad al-Sharaa later appointed as interim president, pledging to form an inclusive government. Media have repeatedly reported that civilians from minority communities, including Druze, Alawite, Christians, and others, have been subjected to violations, which later led to calls for the secession of Suwayda province. Additionally, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have not reportedly been integrated into the 'new Syrian army' as of the time of this report."
