'Fake punishments in fake cases'- Former PM Imran Khan's supporters rally in Peshawar against his 17-year jail sentence

"Hundreds of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan's supporters took to the streets in Peshawar on Sunday to rally against his 17-year prison sentence in a corruption case. Footage shows hundreds of protesters waving Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party flags and holding pictures of Imran Khan, alongside banners with slogans, including 'Free Imran Khan'. Shandana Gulzar Khan, Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan, said, "Fake punishments in fake cases to Prime Minister Imran Khan. They are deluding themselves. The entire country stands with Imran Khan." She went on to say that the whole world knows that a 'man who has committed no crime' has been placed in solitary confinement for 30 days, without sunlight or freedom of movement. "He's in a closed room with no electricity, dirty water," she concluded. Pakistani media reported that the court on Saturday, December 20, sentenced Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to 17 years each in prison for their involvement in a corruption case related to the sale of state gifts below their actual value. The ruling included 10 years of rigorous imprisonment under the Pakistan Penal Code for breach of trust, plus an additional 7 years under anti-corruption laws, along with fines of 16.4 million rupees for each of them. This conviction is part of a series of legal matters that Khan is facing. He has been detained since August 2023 and has faced multiple lawsuits since his removal from office in 2022. Khan denies all wrongdoing and maintains his innocence with regard to all charges. His party describes the cases as being politically motivated."
